The Fool’s Gold Philosophy

Just like in the Odyssey, in which the Greeks could not turn away from the sweet song of the Sirens, the modern day progressives are drawn into the sweet allure of Communism. The progressives cannot resist the idea of equality or at least what their vision is. When I think of Communism, I am reminded of a quote for Alexis De Tocqueville: people “are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom”.
Even after many failures, why is communism still attractive? The answer always comes back either that it has not fully been tried or that the next time it is tried it will work. Communism has been tried in the former Soviet Union, China, Venezuela and North Korea and all have the same issues: a large poor population, no innovation and authoritarian regimes. Communists/Progressives detest the idea of a gap between rich and poor but the irony is that in Communist countries the gap is even greater.
So if this has failed across history, how does it continue to spread? There are two main avenues and they are Academia, and Politicians. Between the two, Academia is the worst. This is an institution which for the most part is subsidized by the government (through student loans) so they are used to being paid without productivity. Most of these institutions are led by Sociology professors (as well as other liberal arts professors) who push communist ideas and the evils of capitalism. These liberal arts professors only way they can make money is at a University as in the real world the skills amount to naught.
The second block is similar to the Academia: career politicians. Politicians like Bernie Sanders, have no skills in the private sector but in the government they can promise the world in that everything should be free. Bernie Sanders lived off his wives money until he finally got a job as mayor in Vermont than elected as a U.S. Senator, so to him government is the answer to everything.
Nowadays the term communism has fallen out of use so they use the new term, Democratic Socialist. Leftists are great at rebranding themselves, so the term Democratic Socialist doesn’t sound as threatening as Communist. But don’t be fooled by the new term, the same tenets exist from Communism. Tocqueville sums it up best: “Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.”
But how did the democratic party shift so much to communism? The big mistake that the democrats made was to let Bernie Sanders run for the Democratic party even though technically he is not in the party. I believe they let him run so as to give Hilary Clinton some practice before her coronation not just of the Democratic nominee but eventually the president. Instead, it gave a fringe Senator a national platform as he gave Hilary Clinton a run for her money and enticed a lot of younger people thinking that the government should take care of everything. Ever since 2016, the democrats have lurched further and further left with every election.
In the mean time, Democrats that would have been considered moderate, have either retired or have embraced this shift to the left for political survival. Though Senators Durbin and Schumer were always left, they no longer defend moderates as they are afraid that not only will they lose the youth vote but will be voted out in a primary election.
Democratic approval ratings are just about at all time low, but this could be for one of two reasons: First, democrats themselves may be discouraged as to where the party is going and the ideals they are embracing. The second possibility is much more scarier: that democratic leadership is not going to the left far enough. I honestly believe most democrats do not embrace the the AOC’s and Omar’s of their party but until they vote these people out, the democrats might be lost in the political wilderness.
The big test will of course be with the upcoming New York Mayor’s election and a lesser extent the Minneapolis election. Zohran Mamdani’s political platform could have been lifted from Karl Marx with such quotes as “taking the means of production” as well as centralizing all aspects of life. Of course, like so many Marxists and Communists, Mamdani lived a privileged and very wealthy life as his dad was a University Professor (of course he was) and was worth millions. Just like AOC, Mamdani and other communists lie about their background to appeal to the working class people while at the same time promising everything should be free without any explanation on how to pay for it.
We will see if this works come November but as of now it looks like it will. The three people running against Mamdani (none of them will drop out) will split the opposition vote for the biggest city in the world to have their first communist mayor. This coupled with the allure of free everything will be the fall of a once great city. I can probably can go on quoting the brilliance of Alexis de Tocqueville but will I will wrap this up the following quote: ” Any measure that establishes legal charity on a permanent basis and gives it an admirative form thereby creates an idle and lazy class, living at the expense of the industrial and working class”.
